How to File a Roof Insurance Claim in Florida

How to File a Roof Insurance Claim in Florida
March 18, 2026 8 min readBy Ares Construction

Insurance is where most homeowners lose money on storm damage, not because they were cheated, but because the claim was documented poorly or filed late. Here is how the process actually works and where it goes sideways.

Before you file: know what you are dealing with

Not every claim is worth filing. Minor wear or a small isolated repair may cost less than your deductible, and filing can affect your record. A free inspection first tells you whether you are looking at genuine storm damage or normal aging. That one step saves a lot of people from a pointless claim.

The basic sequence

  1. Document the damage thoroughly with photos and dates.
  2. Report the claim to your carrier and write down your claim number.
  3. Take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, such as tarping.
  4. The carrier assigns an adjuster who schedules an inspection.
  5. Have your contractor present for that inspection.
  6. Review the carrier's scope and payment against your contractor's assessment.
  7. Dispute or supplement anything the scope missed, with evidence.

Why the contractor should be there for the adjuster visit

An adjuster may be on their tenth roof that day. A licensed contractor who knows what storm damage looks like can point out lifted shingles, damaged flashing, and compromised decking that a quick visual might miss. This is not about arguing, it is about making sure the scope reflects the real work required.

Where claims commonly fall short

  • Interior damage is documented but the roof cause is not tied to it clearly.
  • Code-required upgrades are left out of the scope.
  • Only the visibly damaged slope is included when the system needs more.
  • Decking, underlayment, and flashing are omitted from the line items.
  • The homeowner accepts the first number without a second opinion.

Deadlines matter

Florida has time limits on reporting hurricane and windstorm claims, and they have changed in recent years. Do not rely on a number you heard from a neighbor. Check your specific policy language and report as early as you reasonably can, because waiting is the one mistake with no recovery.

This is general guidance, not legal advice. Your policy is the document that governs your claim, and reading it is genuinely worth an hour of your time.

We meet the adjuster on your roof and document the full scope, so you are not negotiating your claim alone. Free inspection, no obligation.
